One could not stand and watch [the slaughtering] very long without becoming philosophical, without begin-
ning to deal in symbols and similes, and to hear the hog-squeal of the universe.

I get that it's fun but when you have to go to a site like bookseer, isn't that just saying that you really don't understand what reading is all about?  To need a random suggestions based on what others like is democratising reading based on marketing, not quality.

Sherlock Holmes is renowned for being super-rational. Yet his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, claimed to speak with the spirits of the dead. Andrew Lycett considers this paradox on the eve of the author's 150th birthday

redecorating the white house

To what extent does the visual-identity of the inside of the White House reflect contemporary culture or it's occupant.  There is an interesting article in the WSJ which document some of the changes that the Obama houseshold is bringing with it.

The Obamas are sending ripples through the art world as they put the call out to museums, galleries and private collectors that they’d like to borrow modern art by African-American, Asian, Hispanic and female artists for the White House. In a sharp departure from the 19th-century still lifes, pastorals and portraits that dominate the White House’s public rooms, they are choosing bold, abstract art works.

Why can't write TV show stories comfortably past 5 years?

The second story demonstrates that the history of a TV series, like the history of a nation or an art movement, falls into four periods -- primitive, classic, baroque and decadent.

cuttlefish inspire TV's

It's an age old inspiration, that nature inspires creation.  The humble, playful, delightful cuttlefish - an amazing Cephalopoda of the peri-squid form.  It's co-evolution of the chameleon abilities, not as popular as calamari but another sense will be as good.

Almost any book within five minutes...

Revolutionary Espresso Book Machine launches in London, the Espresso Book Machine can print any of 500,000 titles while you wait.  It will be interesting if this makes reading faster, more convenient or deflating.

At a time when reading knowledge is becoming more egalitarian through digital innovation, this appears to be a late development.  It's great for business but it robs us of a pleasure that even Amazon has been able to assist with in a limited fashion.

I go to book shops because they remind me of what I haven't read yet from my own library.  When I go to browse, it's often the books above or below the book that I end up buying.   It's the synchronicity of enquiry, of the bibliophilos hunt that is most rewarding.

This machine confuses choice with choosing in my opinion.
